When Otter was born she was only the size of two hen’s eggs, her eyes were closed and her teeth had not yet come through her gums.
Otter’s Story tells the story of Otter growing up, from her first summer of play with her sister and brother, through the next year when she learns how look after herself.
Otter uses this long time of nearly two years with her mother to practise and perfect the skills she will need for independence: how to use her senses under water to find food, how to make a snug home (a ‘holt’) and how to keep safe from interference by humans, badgers, foxes, domestic dogs and other otters that might wander into her family’s territory. She needs to know how to find enough food in the plenty of summer and in the hard, cold times of winter.

Otter’s journey to adulthood is beautifully illustrated with paintings and drawings by the artist, Gervase A. Gregory.
Gervase observed and sketched the crystal-clear chalk stream and lush fields where Otter was born, and visited the New Forest Wildlife Park to capture the antics of Eurasian otters playing, snoozing, swimming, fishing and generally clowning around – as otters do!
